Major Arcana
There are many authors who have their own ideas on the meaning of the cards and how to interpret them. My bibliography details those books which I have found most useful and interesting and which have contributed to my own interpretations. I shall not dwell on these but hope to give a simple overview of views held by many authors, and you may wish to look at the books in my bibliography to investigate their views further.
There are 22 cards in the major arcana numbered 0 to 21. The Fool is card zero and the Major Arcana is commonly described as the Fool’s journey, with each of the other cards representing an experience or door behind which is some wisdom or knowledge. Personally, I think the name ‘Fool’ is unfair or misleading as I believe it represents someone at the start of a new phase in their life, possibly naïve, prepared to try something new, brave enough to take on a new challenge; to jump off the cliff before thinking it out, whilst the little dog might be saying ‘think before you leap’.
I find it exciting when I get a major card as these cards represent spiritual or psychological changes, factors affecting my inner person, so they are about how I am within, my feelings and emotions. They are the ones which will probably have the most profound effect on me, and when I get several of them together in one reading I really sit up and take notice.
